The devil, witches and their spells
Before the coming of modern sciences, most facts that man could not explain were given supernatural origins i.e they were caused according to superstitions by God or the Devil. This was especially true during the Middle Ages and emphasized by the Church.
Until the end of the XVIIIth century, most priests refused to give holy sacraments. The poor blind, limped, dumb and humped were often disregarded and even sometimes condemned and killed for witchcraft . In France, their home was the “cour des miracles”, a district of Paris near the Porte St-Denis where no stranger would venture.
